UK Athletics new HQ, Birmingham Alexander Stadium run with Borer

One Step Forward with Borer Physical Access Control System and Time Attendance at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

UK Athletics new national headquarters has been fitted with Borer’s unique Access Control and Time Attendance system.

Borer’s secure Power over Ethernet Plus Access Control System uses a single Midspan Bridge device to deliver both power and data over CAT5e/5 cable up to 8 card readers. By eliminating the requirement for local power supplies at each door, Borer’s access control system is easier and faster to install with less amount of infrastructure to deploy, resulting in lifetime energy and costs savings.

Alexander Stadium is one of the UK’s top athletics stadiums and has been a host to several major sporting events. It was orginally built in 1975 and was open for training the following year.

Alexander Stadium has recently undergone a £12.5 million expansion and refurbishment, including the building of a 5,000 seater stand opposite the current main stand which has taken the stadium capacity to 12,700. The stand was completed in June 2011, in time to host the Diamond League British Grand Prix in July 2011 and is rightfully regarded as a world class athletics venue and the new national HQ for UK Athletics.

Birchfield Harriers Athletics Club is based at the Alexander Stadium and are aiming to send up to twelve athletes to the home games for Olympics, London, 2012.

Introducing the Borer LIM V5 3rd Party Door Interface

The Borer LIM V5 (Reader Head Legacy Interface Module) is a low cost, card reader controller designed to interface to 3rd party card readers with existing Borer hardware. It delivers a modular approach in the provision of door access systems.

Approx a 1/3 the size of the Borer LIM V4 (see photo) and measuring just 67 x 37 x 16mm, the LIM V5 supports a card reader conforming to Wiegand (Data/Data), Magnetic Stripe (Clock and Data) or Serial RS232 interface. This covers a wide range of technologies from RF Proximity to Biometric devices.

The LIM V5 gives full offline validation and decision making capability at the point of access, whenever the network link to the host is broken.

Features

  • Reprogrammable Firmware with software updates delivered over the LAN allows for the access control infrastructure to be updated while retaining existing card reader heads and card stock.
  • Supports for access control card reader technologies including Wiegand, Magnetic Stripe and proximity formats including HID, Mifare, iClass, Legic, EM, Hitag, etc.
  • Small size and modular design
  • Large Memory that supports up to 120,000 cardholders / transactions.
  • Dual database of cardholders and access profiles with a fall-back to the last known good database in the event of a data corruption as a result of an interruption in the database download.
  • Keypad Matrix Interface that supports the connection a rugged keypad.
  • Dedicated Optical Tamper Sensor.
  • Press fit cable connectors’ makes for easy and rapid cable termination.

Benefits

  • Provides and upgrade path to smart card and biometric technologies.
  • ‘Plug and Play’ makes for rapid installation and commissioning.
  • Low energy requirements allows for a number of devices to be connected to and powered by a single PoE technology Lock Manager eliminating the need for a power outlet, power supply and battery at the door.
  • Distributed Decision Making allows access decisions to be made by the LIM V5 should the network connection to the central database fail.

Preview the World’s Smallest 2-Door Access Controller from Borer

The new Borer Two Door Lock Manager measuring just 74 x 44 x 15mm in size, supports 4 Cards Readers, 2 Doors Monitors and 2 Powered Lock Outputs.

The Two Door Lock Manager enables 2x complete door installation including electric release, door sensor and card readers, to be centrally powered over a single 300m (1000 ft) length of CAT5e/6 cable utilizing  Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology.

This eliminates the need and cost of providing mains powered fused spurs at every door.

8 Port Midspan Bridge for PoE Access Control

The Borer Midspan Bridge enables the integration of access controlled doors via a TCP/IP network connection to a central management system system and database.

The Midspan Bridge can support up to eight complete secure door access consisting of In and Out readers, two magnetic locks/electric strikes and door sensor. These can be reliably powered over CAT5e/6 cable using Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology without the need for local mains power supply and power outlet at each door. Each of the 8 ports can deliver 13.5 Watts of power over a distance of 300m over CAT5e/6 cable.

The Midspan Bridge provides a secure LAN connection as it communicates with all devices via the local network with a data filter, permitting only registered devices to communicate over the corporate LAN.

This makes it impossible for anyone to hack into the network via a CATe/6 cable plugged into any of the Midspan Bridge’s network ports.

Borer FUSION Smartcard Reader talks to Legic Cards

The Borer FUSION Smartcard Reader now supports Legic Cards, by reading the Legic Card Serial Number. This allows existing users of Legic Cards with Borer Smartcard readers to migrate to ISO standard DESFire or smart cards without replacing the card reader head.

The change-over can be seamless as the FUSION Smartcard Reader can be set to read both Legic and DESFire/Smartcards, only switching off the Legic reading capability when the card changeover is complete.

The Borer FUSION Smartcard reader works with open format cards which, unlike systems that use proprietary and exclusive formats, eliminates single supplier dependence and benefits the user with lower cost for replacement cards

The FUSION  reader supports industry standard (ISO 14443A and B – Mifare and DESfire, ISO 15693) technologies where a single card can be used for a range of applications including: access control, attendance recording, travel card and cashless vending.

Firmware updates are automatically downloaded directly to the reader head over the LAN enabling new smartcard standards to be supported as they are introduced.
